Erwin is the County Seat of Unicoi County
It was established in 1875
Organized January 3, 1876
The area was originally called Greasy Cove
The name was changed after the Indian tribal name of "Unaka" in 1832
It was later called Longmire,
then called Vanderbilt
It was incorporated in 1903.
Unaka means "white, hazy, fog draped"

Erwin is southwest of Johnson City between Unicoi and Ernestville along Highway 19W near the Nolichucky River and within the Cherokee National Forest. The county population on July 1, 1999 was 17,310, and was an increase of 761 over the 1990 census.

and transported to Erwin in order to use the proper facilities
that were located there.
